Does it always have to be a teacher handing out assignments? On the Scribbler staff, you’ll choose your own challenges; receive the training and support you need – usually from your peers, not the teacher; and see the payoff every time you publish an issue of CARPE DIEM.
• You’d like each week to feel different.
When your story, your graphics, and your layout change for each issue, you’ll never be doing the exact same thing twice. New interviews, new photos, a new ad contact, a new Photoshop trick to create a sharp infographic... After a demanding issue, we have been known to go grab an ice cream at Dairy Queen, play DVD games, or toss a frisbee in the field across the street. This staff lives on variety.
• You want to be part of a strong group.
Talk to any Scribbler staffer who attended the NSPA convention in Kansas City, MO, and you’ll learn about the bonds this staff can forge. Whether it be during the first week’s Boot Camp, the fall NSPA convention, the holiday ho-ho-hodown, the winter retreat, the home-cooked dinners on worknights, or even team brainstorming, this staff grows really close.
• You think mediocre isn’t good enough.
CARPE DIEM could be a much less impressive publication, and few would complain. Our staff could be like the blah staffs of some of our neighboring schools. We believe if you can do something well, you should. And if you have the creativity to make something really good, you should go all out. That’s how this staff operates. Too many people around DHS settle for so-so, right?
• You want to make the most out of DHS.
Sometimes students choose electives that don’t really matter to them. It’s important that you make an informed choice before you create your schedule. Talk to any member of the staff, especially those who have chosen to do it for two or three years. Read the comments of staffers on the "Staffers say" page of this site. Serving on the Scribbler staff will be one of your most memorable high school experiences, guaranteed!
